I figure it is about time to update why I am the probably the biggest male DAUGHTRY fan on the planet. I know I am in a huge minority where 95% of the band's hardcore fans are female. It doesn't really bother me, though. My daughters think I'm cool for it, so how bad could it be?
I grew up listening to Bon Jovi and Guns-n-Roses. I loved Bon Jovi's songs, which ranged the full spectrum of soft ballads to high powered rock. Guns-n-Roses provided that "take no prisoners" rock that you could turn all the way up on the stereo. From then to now, I have listened to hundreds of artists, and loved hundreds of songs.
Fast forward to the end of November 2006... the official birth of DAUGHTRY. With eager anticipation, I bought the CD the day it came out. After listening to it, I was immediately hooked. It sounded like a greatest hits CD, not a rookie artist. Every song had such emotion and great hooks. No offense to the 100's of artists referenced before, but nobody has ever made me love music, like DAUGHTRY has. Whether it is the heartfelt lyrics of HOME, or the heartpounding THERE AND BACK AGAIN, each song touches your soul. I estimate that I have listened to the complete CD approximately 500+ times. Some might call that a "small" addiction... oh well.
Every member of the band is so talented, and each brings something different to the table. Joey is amazingly talented and seems like the sneaky class clown. Josh is just so fun to watch play... he was destined for this. I love watching JP play because you can tell he is passionate about his craft, and he loves to SMILE. Brian was a super addition, with a ton of talent. And Chris... well, what can I say? He is a tremendous artist, but he is an even better person. In this day and age of "celebrities gone bad", he provides a refreshing change. Though he did not sign up to be a role model, he sure does make a great one. Like me, he is raising 2 children who are not biologically his and has embraced it wholeheartedly. He has been apart from his wife for long stretches, but yet puts her at the top of his priority list and is not afraid to say it out loud. Throughout this whole experience, he has remained humble and appreciative for what he has been given... not many people could have done it!
Over the past year, I have seen the band 5 times: Downtown Greensboro NC, Raleigh NC Dorton, Charlotte NC Ovens, and Greensboro NC War Memorial 2x. I have been fortunate to have been included in the HOME music video, as well as the HOME video montage that played behind the band during the AMA Awards. And, though, I live about 15 minutes from Chris, I have never met him.
I plan on going to see DAUGHTRY and Bon Jovi in Greensboro on 3/16. My love for music has come full circle... two of my favorites of all time together. Notice I put DAUGHTRY before Bon Jovi!!!
Final Thought:
Everything MIDAS touched turned to GOLD...
Everything DAUGHTRY touches turns to PLATINUM!!!
Happy Birthday to a Great Artist, Father, and Husband
I stood at the stage in Greensboro on Saturday 12/22, and I thought about all of the achievements over the last year. Millions of records sold, #1 songs/videos, sold out concerts, touching the lives of millions of fans, etc. It has been an absolutely incredible year. As you shook my hand, I knew I had only a split second of your attention, so I said the most important thing I could think of... "thank you." Thank you for your artistry, and thank you for your example.
Chris, you have earned every bit of your success. But, the thing I admire most about you is the way you have handled yourself during your rapid rise to stardom. Most people would have caved to the temptations created from stardom. However, you have remained humble, appreciative, and true to yourself the entire time. And though you didn't "sign up" to be a public role model, I can safely say that you shine as one to people of all ages, myself included.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Daughtry! And Happy New Year to you and your family!
