I was there in NYC on NYE in Times Square and went through Hell to get my golden spot near that stage and know all of the elements you guys had to deal with that night and I have to say you all did a great job! Can't wait to see you on the new tour in 2010! Hope 2010 brings alot of joy and blessings your way!!

Daughtry bassist talks new album and returning to Omaha

"It's Not Over" for former American Idol rocker Chris Daughtry and his bandmates as they hit up Omaha's Civic Auditorium with a little taste of home and a new album on Oct. 21.

Daughtry returned to Omaha to promote their second album "Leave This Town" with hard rock bands Cavo and Theory of a Deadman.

Along with a few surprises, Daughtry brought with them a collection of tracks co-inspired by some of rock's biggest personalities including Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, Lifehouse's Jason Wade and Three Days Grace's Adam Gontier.

Bassist and back-up vocalist Josh "JP" Paul spoke with The Gateway about his musical beginnings, life experiences, their new album and life on the road.

What was it like to play the drums in Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" video at age 7?

It was definitely a great opportunity. I didn't really know really what was going on. I just knew that I played drums and I went to some audition where there were 500 other little kids. And, I actually got it and did it. I was a little bit overwhelmed, but I thought it was awesome. Don Henley's really cool.

Obviously you've built a framework of success playing the bass guitar. You started playing with older bands and even earned an endorsement at age 15. What made you choose to play the bass guitar to begin with?

Honestly, I learned that when you move into an apartment, neighbors really don't like the drums too much. When you move in from a house into an apartment. I couldn't really play drums anymore on a regular basis. So, I took up the bass. My grandfather played bass and he had one lying around. So, he gave it to me and I started playing to every song that I possibly could on the radio, tapes. I guess it was tapes back then. Now, I'm not that old. Come on, I was like 11.

You used to play for the bands Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, both punk bands. Describe the transition from punk to working with Chris Daughtry, who is more rock.

Fortunately I grew up listening to every kind of music and being exposed to a lot of different kinds of music, so I played everything from jazz to country to funk and R&B and always rock stuff. But, it's not that big of a change. Obviously, I had to calm down a little bit and my playing even in those bands. Here you're kind of like the lead. Basically, there's the lead guitar player, because there's so much bass going on. And, I'm a little bit more mature now and we're doing this.

You've played with a diverse collection of artists, including Kelly Osbourne, before teaming up with Daughtry. Which artist before Chris well-prepared you before you actually found what you were looking for?

Every experience that I have had - touring and making records and working - has prepared me for what I'm doing now. Every experience is a learning experience and I'd say for any aspiring musicians out there, try to do everything that you can.

How did they recruit you to become a member of Daughtry?

They called a recruiting hotline and no, just kidding with you. Someone called me to see if I wanted to come in and meet with Chris and we jammed and everything worked out. He's a really cool dude. And here I am.

What's been the craziest thing a fan has ever done to you or for you?

You know, I don't even know. There hasn't been too many crazy, crazy things going on. I've got a lot of Starbucks cards. Sometimes people read interviews, such as these, and they take from it what they want, I guess you could say. One time I said that I was a fan of Jimi Hendrix, just in passing, and I got a bunch of Jimi Hendrix T-shirts. So, nothing too crazy, though.

How do you guys get revved up for a show? Do you guys play video games, vocal exercises, what do you do?

A little bit of everything. Some of us are maybe warming up our hands. I like to dance a little bit, dance around the dressing room, grooving to some booty-shaking music. That's what keeps me going.

What has been the best moment you've experienced so far while touring as a musician?

One of my favorites has got to be winning the American Music Award, getting up on stage and receiving that. That was awesome.

Were you a fan of Chris when he was on "American Idol"? Did you vote for him or your bandmates vote for him?

I'd never seen American Idol actually, before this. It's not that I didn't like it. I just never had the chance to watch it. I had not even heard who Chris Daughtry was, but when I actually did get a phone call to go meet up with him, a couple of my friends and some pretty heavy bands said, "Man, they got this really cool rock dude on 'American Idol.'" I was like, "What?" So, everything worked out, though.

How has the tour been going so far? What are your expectations for Omaha? Is it going to be your first time here?

We've been there before. The tour actually is just starting. It's awesome. The production that we have out is really, really, really cool. I'm excited to get out there and play and for everybody to be able to see it. We've got a bunch of new songs from the new record out there. We are going to be kicking major butt.

How do you think Daughtry's music has changed since featuring you and your bandmates in your recent album, "Leave This Town?"

We've been touring pretty much non-stop for three years. So, when you do that with bandmates or other fellow musicians and fortunately, we happen to be really good friends, you kind of grow together as a band. You get better every time you play together. So, for instance, touring off the last record, when you would see us live, it doesn't necessarily sound exactly like the record. We've put in our own little pieces into those songs and I think it's definitely really cool and you can hear that on this record "Leave This Town."

What is your favorite thing to do in your downtime?

Spend time with my family. I have little boys and a wife at home and I try to spend as much time with them as possible.

Who was your inspiration growing up, music wise?

I have so many. My grandfather was one. He played every instrument, wrote songs, wrote music, had a little record company and Don Henley was a big influence on me. And, there's a million of them. Just love music.

What's currently on your iPod?

Let's see. It's funny you say that. I'm going to look at it right now. I have Kings of Leon, Imogen Heap, a little Bryan Adams and New Edition. There you go.

Where do you guys see your career going from here?

We're going to hopefully continue doing what we're doing, do another record, at least another record and keep on keeping on. We want to have a long career doing this.

so i have a sorta nickname for JP. i call him Just Perfect am i crazy to come up with nicknames for rockstars and such? LOL i still hafta come up with nicknames for the other daughtry guys though. i working on it.
