Criminal Minds, "My Side of the Story" the Song Everyone is Talking About

March 12, 2009 by Artisttia

"My Side of the Story" the Song Heard on Criminal Minds at the End of the Episode Demonology.

If you weren't already a fan of Hodges prior to the episode of Criminal Minds called Demonology, perhaps you are now. When the show ended, I was pleasantly surprised that this popular show had decided to showcase this talented artist. The show ended with the soulful tune named, My Side of the Story. Incidentally, My Side of the Story is the title track on his soon to be released album.

The minute Criminal Minds ended, I knew I had to add this song to my ever growing collection. It was as if Hodges had written about a moment in my life. I had to have that song and I had to have it now. I rushed to my computer. Frantically, I searched various search engines in vain as I hoped to find a place where I could purchase this song. Imagine my incredible disappointment when I couldn't find the song for buy anywhere. You know things are bad when you can't find it on iTunes. Well, that's the bad news. But don't despair, I didn't give up. As a result, I have good news too. At least for now, this lyrical ballad, My Side of the Story can be heard on http://www.myspace.com/hodges. Unfortunately, Hodges only has one song that can be purchased; as expected it can be found at iTunes. That is the song is called, Blink of an Eye. It is a reflection on a past relationship.

It has been some time since the music industry has produced a singer/song writer with this kind of talent for writing ballads. His ballads range from mellow to having a rock edge. Because of his unique ability to speak to the human experience, the audience is able to feel emotions through the songs that he weaves. You can tell his lyrics come from personal experience or the experiences of someone he is/was close to. This masterful musician appeals to fans from high school an twenties set and upwards. If you want to see a demonstration of Hodges musicianship prior to shelling out money for concert tickets, turn your eyes to U Tube.

If you want to learn more about the man behind these songs, his background, which incidentally is fascinating, go to http://www.myspace.com/hodges. Hodges grew up in the state of Texas but recently moved to California. According to Hodges, "(his) influences are really the artists who know how to take the universal themes of songwriting and make them their own." He certainly has been able to do this and more. Of course, it is a great place for fans to hear full length previews of some of the songs that will be on his album. The best part about this site is you can play the songs there as often as you wish. The names of the songs, that are available on the site that I haven't mentioned previously are, Show Me How It Feels, American, The Way to Infinity, and Call me at 323-271-0004. Listening to the songs this way isn't as good as buying the CD, but it will have to do until it becomes available. At this point the album is scheduled to come out sometime this summer. It would be the perfect album to take to the beach for fun in the sun. He is one rising star to watch; it certainly won't hurt this fellow's career that not only is he a great singer but he is easy on the eyes. Hodges plans a summer tour as well. Cross your fingers and maybe you'll be lucky enough to have a concert come your way. Be sure to look for this Hodges when he comes your way on tour. Well, until then at least you'll now be able to listen to some of his music.

Hodges at Brixton

by Shaun Hague

(Updated: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 3:49 PM PST)

Singer/songwriter Hodges makes his Redondo Beach debut at Brixton Dec. 18 where he will be performing songs from his debut album, “My Side of The Story,” as he closes out a very busy year and prepares for a big 2009.

His story begins in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he was born into a vibrant world of music. At a young age, his musical influences were already in place through his father. Hodges’ father is a Juilliard-trained musician and an accomplished concert pianist. He also started the first multitrack recording studio in Ft. Worth. Unlike most children who have to spend their weekends mowing the lawn or washing dishes, Hodges’ chores consisted of cleaning his dad’s music studio.

“My father did a lot of commercial music work when I was growing up, and he would send my older brother and I into the studio every weekend to clean it,” Hodges said. “What we really ended up doing was listening to my dad’s vast record collection, which consisted of all kinds of different music.”

The distinctive sounds of those records (The Beatles, Paul Simon, George Strait) would be all the fuel Hodges needed to forge his path in the music world. It wouldn’t take long after that for the young songwriter to ink his first lyrics.

“I really lived in my own bubble there in Ft. Worth, being in such a different environment really inspired me,” said Hodges.

Also inspiring him were the works of U2, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Peter Gabriel. Upon graduating from high school, he enrolled in Texas Christian University as a theater major. While in college, the avid lyricist decided it was time to pick up the guitar and add some music to his vocal melodies. “I was always writing songs and that really enabled me to pick up the guitar,” Hodges said.

When he wasn’t studying theater or public relations, Hodges spent his evenings playing in various rock bands across Texas. One of those groups, 24 Days, released an album recorded by Hodges’ father.

When he turned 23, Hodges began to realize that the Lonestar State didn’t offer what he needed to pursue his musical dreams.

“I decided to move to Los Angeles because I needed to be in a major music hub and even thought about going to New York,” said Hodges.

Like many Hollywood transplants, he had to start at the bottom. He spent his time playing various coffee shops across the city, gaining valuable experience. His hard work did not go unnoticed and Hodges soon found himself in the company of a well-known management company.

“My friend Scott was buying a car off a guy who as it turned out was a music manager,” Hodges said.

After purchasing the vehicle, his friend passed Hodges’ demo CD to the seller, Nick Lippman of Lippman Entertainment. Shortly after, the Texas native was being represented by the same firm that was handling the careers of Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty, George Michael and Anna Nalick. After making his new connection, the young musician went into the studio and cut a six-song EP. Along with the new demo, he was also playing to packed crowds every week at clubs like Harvelle’s in Santa Monica, The Mint in Los Angeles, The Roxy and the Viper Room.

He was quickly developing his craft in front of the L.A. crowd and Hodges’ efforts were about to be realized by a notable name in the music industry. Rob Thomas (lead singer of Matchbox Twenty) was forming his own imprint label on Epic Records with Evan Lamberg, then vice president of publishing for EMI.

“Nick (Lippman) came to me and said that Rob loves your demo and he really wants to sign you,” said Hodges.

The two musicians met backstage at a Thomas concert in Santa Barbara, chatted about music and the rest was history. In a recent YouTube video, Thomas gave his thoughts on the newest artist on his Rtel label, “Everything that I love at the end of the day is a guy and an instrument pouring his heart out and singing his take on his life … These are songs that people will be singing forever.”

After signing with Rtel in the fall of 2007, Hodges jumped right into the studio and began work on his debut album, “My Side Of The Story.” The album was recorded in Seattle at London Bridge Studios with legendary hitmaker, Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam, Blind Melon, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down).

“I am really proud of this first record and feel it is a great introduction to who I am,” Hodges said.

While waiting for the release of his debut, Hodges has kept himself pretty busy. This past summer, he was on the road opening for Matchbox Twenty and Daughtry at large venues, playing for more than 15,000 people. He also has been constantly writing and continuing to grow as an artist. “Music is a very therapeutic thing and I am always writing,” Hodges said. “I just hope that anyone coming to the Brixton show keeps an open mind on my music.”

Hodges will take the stage at 8 p.m. Dec. 18. A few select tracks from his debut can be heard on his Web site, www.hodgeslive.com or at www.myspace.com.

The latest update from Hodges ~""

"Satellite Girl" - fall studio sessions

Hey guys, hope the weekend is going well. Here's another song I've recently recorded called "Satellite Girl", I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I went down live(on the fly) with the band in the studio and it was really cool to see where the song ended up taking us. So enjoy, and I'll be in touch soon with more news and updates.

Cheers,

Hodges

Shaun Hague contributes all the lead and slide guitar talents in this song! Beautiful!!

I asked more about Hodges and Shaun - this is the reply from the Rob Thomas forum:

"crazee4kyle Posted 10 November 2008 03:26 PM

Thanks Yvonne! Really appreciate your support for Hodges!! I handle the Street Team for Hodges and also do the Fan Page for Shaun Hague.

Hodges is the name of the band although the lead singer is Justin Hodges. He started out as a solo singer/songwriter when Rob signed him. But when he toured this past summer he formed a band and Shaun Hague is his lead guitar player. Shaun plays on all of his music now and will be touring with him in 2009. They have a drummer Daniel James and did have a Bass Player Joey Clement but he has since become a part of David Cook's Band!! Shaun is a very prominent guitarist in the Southern California area and has toured with the famous Kenny Wayne Shepherd and many others. You can read alot about him on the Shaun Hague Fans Page. He is a sweetheart. So that is why you see him on the board promoting Hodges.

Well, they both are sweethearts!!

There has not been a single released to the Radio yet - hopefully in early 2009.

It is really great to hear he is being talked about on the Daughtry board. That is just awesome!!

Thanks again and keep watching the board. I and Shaun post updates whenever Hodges lets us know! I also promote any other shows Shaun Hague does when he plays with other artists.

Hope this helps!!"
